Editorial Reviews:

This is the most popular opera production so far on DVD, surpassing even Franco Zeffirelli's lavish, symbol-laden La Traviata. It is an exciting Carmen, with a young-looking Placido Domingo in top form for a role he has sung hundreds of times. For Julia Migenes, it was her first performance in a role she would have trouble performing in an opera house. Her voice does not fit easily into Carmen's range, and she spent months training it, very successfully, before singing the role in a recording studio where the soundtrack was taped before the film was shot. Casting her in the role was a gamble, but it worked; she is a convincing actress--even better than Maria Ewing in the competing DVD edition from Covent Garden, though Ewing acts very well and has a more appropriate voice.

This movie version was filmed on location, conveying a kind of atmosphere, a sense of space, movement, and presence hard to achieve in a staged performance shot for television. It takes the action out of doors for many scenes. The opening titles are superimposed on the bloody conclusion of a bullfight. The changing of the guard in the opening scene, with the boys' chorus playing soldier, the crowd scenes, the dance number that opens Act II, the panoramic scenery of the smugglers' mountain hideout, all benefit from the freedom granted by movie cameras. But the music is, on the whole, more effectively performed in the Covent Garden production, which also handles close-up shots better, perhaps because it was directed with a small screen in mind. The opera house atmosphere will make hard-core opera fans feel more at home. The movie version uses the opera's original opera comique form with some spoken dialogue rather than recitatives. --Joe McLellan

Summary: My rebuttal to Carmen
Comment: This was my comment on the condition of the tape of Carmen I got from Amazon, the class that I mention was my rebuttal to Carmen. I explain in that class that I loved the sound track to Carmen but I was surprised to find that the translation revealed the evil side of women in this movie. I think the reason why heaven blessed this with such good music was in the song by Mary Poppins, "A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down". The truth can be a bit hard to swallow, but this well done movie was the first time the evil side of women was so clearly conveyed to me. My rebuttal to the evil side of women is told better on my first class, (#1a at Vimeo), but the last class sums this movie of Carmen better.

Dear Mike Libby,
I got the tape in a few days and copied it to a dvd (it came in perfect), so I could record a class over it. That's class #127x12 at MikeOversonEndTimes-org. I talk about Carmen and show a few scenes of it in the first 30 minutes, you can tell I recorded over that tape at the very end (at 2:08 minutes). It was a perfect tape to record my "LAST CLASS & GOODBYE" on. (Because the evil side of women has ended the magic and wisdom heaven was sharing with "the one" to share with the public through these classes, and that made Carmen the perfect tape to record my "last class & goodbye" on). Thank you that it was in such good condition. (Class 127x13 is a 53 minute summary of 127x12 that I did for Vimeo, under MikeOversonEndTimes.)

I just looked at every review of Carmen and didn't find one by Leonard Maltin. However John A Furner's review: "Maltin's Carmen review is brain dead" was right next to my review. Being "the one" I've learned about the evil games they play on the internet to discredit, mock or slander what I'm doing, and this is an example of it. Fortunately for me, God has a way of complementing the things I do, and that includes even this movie review I did of Carmen. Before I tell it, I'll provide the instant knee jerk reaction to mock me and that is: "U R so vain!". That was the "Final Cut Express" I got on 10-12-09, (mocking me as U R so vain), that caused me to record "MY LAST CLASS AND GOODBYE" over the tape of Carmen the next day on 10-13-09. The amazing complement I found was in the lyrics to the song "Daniel" by Elton John. Though I've only seen (and loved) Spain on a tour video and in Carmen, I believe the lyrics refer to my premature death, that's from God ending my classes and my life soon due to "no thanks, no pay and no respect". As it says in the song: "Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane, I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain, oh I can see Daniel waving goodbye, God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes... Daniel my brother you are older than me, do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal, YOU'RE EYES HAVE DIED but you see more than I...Oh I can see Daniel waving goodbye, God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes".

Summary: Magnificent and incomparable
Comment: This enactment of Bizet's "Carmen" is absolutely flawless in every aspect.

Julia Migenes-Johnson's sensual, luxuriant, hedonistic portrayal of Carmen is beyond description; the voices of the Julia, Placido Domingo and the choruses are wonderful; the Andalusian locale provides spectacular visual backdrops.

I cannot imagine a more superior rendition of Bizet's Carmen. Bizet - Carmen / Maazel, Migenes, Domingo

Summary: Brillant and accessible film version of Carmen
Comment: The 1984 Rosi film is a brillant and beautifilly photographed version of what is probably the best known opera. A terrific way to introduce a novice to this musical form with wonderful performances by Placido Domingo and the very earthy and sexy Julia Migenes-Johnson. A film classic that is sadly out-of-print in the U.S.

Now, about those outrageously priced collectors copies to which there is a resonable alternative. For less than the price of several of the used copies, it is possible to buy an all-region DVD player from Amazon for around $100-$125. Then you purchase a region 2 copy of Carmen from Amazon's U.K. service. You'll get the same great movie for $34.99 and have the ability to play DVDs from around the world. An added advantage is that the region 2 import of Carmen is anamorphic, providing a better picture than the grossily overpriced U.S. edition.

Carmen is a tremendous film, but $175.00 for a used copy and $1495.00 for a factory-sealed edition? What arrogance!

Summary: Good thing I bought it awhile ago!
Comment: Damn! I bought this years ago when it first came out. Little did I know it would become so expensive. It is a great DVD I only wish my wife appreciated opera as much as I do, I would watch it more often. Migenes is so great in this role!

Summary: Overpriced
Comment: Julia Migenes is the definitive Carmen. The film is perfect from start to finish and features some of the best operatic singing available.

However, A DVD for over $100 is outrageous. Save it for tickets to the real opera and see Julia live.
